For meaningful planning for social and economic development and for policy making, basic demographic information of a current and continuous nature is a must. Though census data are basic and are of great importance, but due to their static nature and inherent restricted subject coverage, they are only of limited value. Dynamic dependable data through continuous registration system coupled with census and other adhoc data are the ones really needed. Unfortunately, in most of the developing countries, where the resources are limited, and the need for proper planning most, such dynamic data are either not available or are not dependable due to several reasons. The various characteristics of the deposited layer such as dilution, hardness, chemical composition etc. have been evaluted with respect to variation in the welding voltage current and speed.
It has been found that welding parameters have difinite influence on the above mentioned characteristics of the deposited layer of the hard metal as well as on the efficiency of the deposition.

Weld bead geometry and heat affected zone which are generally dependent on the welding parameters may also be influenced by the chemical composition of flux i.e. the flux base and its basicity in submerged arc welding. The different flux constituents which impart different physical/chemical properties to the flux may also affect the weld bead geometry and heat affected zone.
Investigation have been carried out to study the combined effect of welding parameters and flux basicity which is one of the measure for chemical nature of the flux on weld bead geometry and heat affected zone in the case of mild steel.
It has been found that the welding parameters and flux basicity appreciably influence the depth of penetration and the weld bead width. The reinforcement is also influenced by the welding parameters, however, flux basicity does not seem to affect reinforcement appreciably.
The widths of heat affected zones at the centre line of the weld bead and at the toe of the weld are appreciably influenced by the welding parameters. Higher basicity fluxes generally give rise to lower width of heat affected zones as compared to low basicity fluxes.

To study the influence of welding parameters on arc efficiency during pulse TIG welding of aluminium and mild steel, the heat loss through radiation was collected from a coil placed around the arc and the heat loss from torch was measured through the water employed for its cooling. 'The investigations revealed that the welding parameters and material of the work piece have definite influence on TIG arc efficiency. Higher efficiencies are associated with the welding of aluminium as compared to that of mild steel.- Influence of Baking Conditions of MMAW Electrodes on Weld Metal Mechanical Properties

Investigations have been carried out to study the influence of electrode baking temperatures and the duration of baking on the mechanical properties of the weldments with rutile and basic types of electrodes. It has been found that baking of rutile electrodes improves the weld-metal characteristics provided the baking is for short duration of 1 hour at 150°C. Higher temperature of baking leads to overall deterioration of mechanical properties. With basic type of electrode used for investigations, higher temperatures up to 350°C can be employed for shorter duration of one to two hours or 250°C for 2-3 hours baking, to achieve the optimum results i.e. good mechanical properties of the weld metal. Higher baking temperatures deteriorate the weld metal strength. The weld metal hydrogen content does not appreciably reduce beyond the baking temperature of 350°C basic coated electrodes.- Investigations into TIG Arc Efficiency

Experimental investigations have been carried out to study the influence of various welding variables on arc efficiency in TIG (GTA) process using water cooled copper block as work piece. Heat collected by the water flowing through the hollow block, has been used to calculate the arc efficiencies. It has been shown that the welding current, arc length and electrode polarity have appreciable influence on the arc efficiencies over the entire range of investigations. Gas flow rate and torch angle also influence efficiency significantly but only under certain conditions.- Influence of Flux Composition on Recovery of Carbon Silicon and Manganese During Submerged Arc Welding

Ca0-Al203 based flux system along with other constituents like MGO. TiO,, MnO and CaF have been designed with the help of binary and ternary phase diagrams. The flux constituents selection has been made according to the flux liquidus temperature. Fluxes were prepared by agglomeration technique and basicity index (B.l.) varied between 1.20 and 3.8.
The influence of flux basicity on the transfer of carbon and distribution of silicon and manganese between weld metal and slag system has been determined. With the help of above data, a relationship has been developed between the flux composition and the gain or loss of these elements during welding. The results show that the flux composition which affects the physico-chemical and metallurgical characteristics of the slag, plays significant role in the transfer of C. Si and Mn to the weld metal.

The influence of welding parameters on the weld bead geometry in the vertical down position has been investigated with GMA welding process. Both solid and flux cored wires have been used for investigations. The results are compared with those obtained for similar investigations in the flat position welding.
Investigations have revealed that in vertical down position within a certain range of welding current, voltage and welding speed, the weld geometry is influenced in the same way as in the case of flat position. However, beyond these ranges of welding parameters the weld bead geometry is appreciably influenced by welding position. There is also an appreciable influence of flux cored wire, over solid wire, on weld geometry.

Experimental investigations have been carried out to study the influence of various pulse parameters on TiG arc efficiency. L-shaped water cooled copper block as work piece and calorimetric set-up lor collecting the heat through the flowing water from the copper block were used, for determination of arc efficiency.
From the investigations it has been revealed that different parameters such as mean current, pulse current, background current, pulse frequency, arc gap, torch angle and gas flow rale influence arc efficiency. Except for gas flow rate, decreasing trends in arc efficiency have been generally observed with the increase of pulse / welding parameters.
